Decorating your home for the holidays is truly a favourite Canadian tradition! \u00a0Whether it’s simple exterior lights or a seasonal planter, or more elaborate displays outside and in – the festive spirit shines in even the most novice decorator.<\/b><\/p>\n

Colour Themes<\/span><\/strong>
\nOur friends at Sheridan Nurseries <\/a>start planning for this busy season early in the fall. \u00a0Brenda Luckhardt, business to business marketing and development manager, shares these tips and trends for 2013. \u201cHoliday items often follow colour and style trends seen in fashion and home d\u00e9cor. This year we\u2019re seeing candy-floss pink and black and white themes emerge,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

\"Fi-Fi<\/a>

Fi-Fi is a little girl’s dream: a soft pink-coloured tree decked out with ballet slippers, French poodles and feathered birds!<\/p><\/div>\n

It\u2019s not all glitz and glam though. There’s also a return to rustic, natural woodland accents, especially in outdoor container design. Look for driftwood stars, birch lollipops and straw owls and reindeer.<\/p>\n

Let your holiday decor reflect your own personality. \u00a0Using driftwood stars was only the start of this coastal inspired theme. \u00a0I found this on a beach cottage blog<\/a> and was determined to try the tealights in the clear glass jars.<\/p>\n

Simple, rustic and yet still a warm holiday feel.<\/p><\/div>\n

Choosing Your Tree<\/strong><\/span>
\nLuckhardt says the traditional choice of a fresh cut tree is still the most popular among their customers. Balsam and Fraser Fir<\/a> are the top sellers but a relative newcomer Nordman Fir <\/a>is catching on for its soft blue-green needles which will hold for over three weeks indoors.<\/p>\n

The dark glossy needles of the Nordman Fir are delicate to touch and last long indoors.<\/p><\/div>\n

Sheridan advises to always give a \u201creal\u201d tree a fresh cut, use Sta-Fresh<\/a> or similar product and check the water level daily.<\/p>\n

For those who prefer to stay away from fresh trees, Everlast<\/a> trees are an excellent choice, particularly if plan to be away over the holidays, as they don’t require water. \u00a0Depending on the look you’re after, you’ll find everlasting trees range from very life-like to boldy different in mint green, white, black or the pink tree shown above.<\/p>\n

Fragrance of a Fresh Tree<\/span><\/strong>
\nFor many people, the fragrance of a fresh cut tree is what we\u2019re after but we don\u2019t want a real tree. Incorporating cuttings into table centrepieces or on fireplace mantles is a great way to have the scent and can look very dramatic in a room. Or, consider a potpourri or room freshener with the evergreen scent. \u00a0Here are some wonderful homemade potpourri recipes<\/a> for the holidays.<\/p>\n
